About Us
The South Eastern School of Martial Arts (SESMA) have been teaching martial arts in Norwich for over 20 years and Newmarket over 12 years.
SESMA are seen as a local expert in areas of Anti-Bullying, Personal Safety and Life-skills by the media and have been invited by TV and Radio to give advise and interviews.
Our instructors are amongst the finest in the area and are still active in their search for martial arts knowledge. All our instructors have competed in challenges of fitness, endurance and competition, with many gaining recognition for their skill and commitment.
What makes us different to other martial art clubs?
The South Eastern School of Martial Arts (SESMA) is a professional martial arts school that can offer much more than the locally run club.
We at SESMA believe that through teaching a martial art, the students can learn how to defend themselves against other individuals physically, but the benefit of SESMA’s martial art programmes do not stop there.
We teach the students how to protect themselves mentally too.
Becoming more confident and self assured in the way the student holds themselves. Standing tall, eye contact, body language and sounding confident are some of the key elements that we teach the students.
We also believe in good old fashion values like Respect, Honesty, Integrity and Loyalty and these are taught within our classes by the instructors and having higher grade students leading by example and being role models to the younger students.
SESMA’S Master Instructor Wayne Baker has introduced a learning programme into the Karate classes that was devised by David Koutsoukis: The Six Kinds of Best.
The children learn a student creed about being kind to themselves, to others, to the environment and the community. This is followed up with fun learning objective worksheets emailed to the children to complete at home.
David Koutsoukis’s The Six Kinds of Best is used in many main stream schools in Australia, New Zealand and here in the UK. For more details about the Six Kinds of Best please see link in side bar.
Giving back to the community
SESMA works closely with the community by helping the local authorities such as schools, community police, and councils with safety issues, special events and government objectives within the school’s curriculum.
SESMA also helps local schools and charities with fund raising and supporting their events by attending and putting on demos and displays.
Master Wayne has been asked by many schools to conduct assemblies and workshops on key issues like Bullying and Confidence building. Master Wayne has also been asked to speak to children more on a personal basis with bullying issues either in or out of school.
A Black Belt to some means that you are able to defend yourself.
A SESMA Black Belt shows that you are dedicated, persistent, have commitment & patience and show willing to learn and strive to better yourself.
Being a SESMA Black belt you will have learnt how to be a leader and a role model to others, have good communication skills to all age groups from 4 year olds to adults and have the ability to listen and take on board other people’s opinions and suggestions. These are all attributes that will help in education and employment.
Achieving black belt is a goal that will take several years for most people, so we recommend that you attend classes at least twice a week. In the early stages of your martial arts training, you can progress though the grades by attending once a week, but it will take longer to develop the required skills and attributes need for the coloured belts. To really get the most out of martial arts, we advise that you attend regularly, making it part of your weekly schedule.
