Brief Background
My parents are from Sheffield but I was born in Norwich in 1971. I started karate at a club (Eastern Region Karate) near to where I lived when I was 9 and achieved my Black Belt with English Korean Karate Assoc E.K.K.A at 16.
I became very interested in the competition side of martial arts and have won many local, national and international competitions. I have represented England 4 times in Karate (Gold-England, Gold-Italy, Silver-America and Bronze in the European Championships-Germany) and I have also competed in semi & full contact kickboxing tournaments.
What do I enjoy most about martial arts?
The competition side of martial arts does not excite me like it use to when I was younger, it has been replaced with the pleasure and excitement of teaching. Even though I have been teaching over 20 years, I still love teaching and find it very rewarding. I believe that I am helping people to improve themselves, whether it be more coordination, confidence, respect/disicpline or fitness. At present I am working with a child that is wheelchair bound with cerebral palsy. I have been asked to help improve his confidence, strength and range of movement in his limbs. He loves the karate so much and is currently a blue stripe in the Little Dragons class at Newmarket.
Future Aspirations
For SESMA to be recognized as an asset to the community by continuing work with schools and the local police. I would also like to help more children that have learning or physical challenges.
